MSD Drag Racing Ignition Systems


7AL-2+:
*Built-in two step rev control.

You ll recognize the 7AL-2 Plus Ignition Control, as its predecessor is the most popular ignition control used in drag racing. The Plus model updates the original 7AL-2 with improved internal components plus MSD engineers added a 2-Step Rev Control and a useful diagnostic LED. Visually, you ll notice the two terminal strips that allow for easier wiring in your race car. The LED over the power connections will come in handy for troubleshooting as it flashes only when the coil fires. That way you know that the coil, the trigger source and ignition are all functioning properly. The housing is the same size as the 7AL-2 and is supplied with vibration mounts and a few rpm modules.



7AL-3:
The most complete drag racing ignition available! The 7AL-3 is based off the well proven 7AL-2. It features the same capacitive discharge multiple sparks plus offers 20% more primary voltage and an additional 35% more spark energy. Not only is the 7AL-3 packed with more power but it also features a host of drag racing accessories. A built-in Three Step Rev Control provides three different rpm limits that can be used for the burnout, holeshot and top end. The rpm limits are adjustable with easy to access plug-in modules and will deliver consistent performance on each run. A Multi-Step Retard features four different modules that can be activated as well as a RPM activated switch that can activate components such as a micro-switch on the shifter or a nitrous solenoid. Many race engines with crank trigger systems or locked out distributors will benefit from the 7AL-3's built-in start retard option. During cranking the start retard will retard the timing 25 allowing the engine to turn over easier. When the engine starts, the timing will go back to it's mechanical setting. One last option is an rpm activated switch. This feature allows you to activate a solenoid or shift light at an adjustable rpm. When the engine hits the desired rpm, the component is activated and whenever the rpm falls below that amount it is deactivated. The increased output and built-in racing features make the MSD 7AL-3 the best and most complete high performance drag racing ignition available.



Digital-7+:
For drag racers, the MSD 7AL-2 has long been the standard ignition due to its reliability and power. By combining the 7AL-2's high performance with the proven digital technology from the Digital-6 Plus Ignition, MSD once again raised the performance ignition standards by introducing the Digital-7 Plus Ignition Control. State-of-the-art technology allows the 7 Plus to produce more power while using the same amount of current. The CD circuits combined with an IGBT Coil driver deliver 520 - 535 volts to the primary side of the coil with up to 190 millijoules of energy at any rpm. Below 3,300 there is of course MSD's powerful series of multiple sparks, rather than a single spark. This spark series burns in the cylinder for over 20 of crankshaft rotation resulting in improved combustion and increased power. Inside the familiar gold housing is a 15 Megahertz microcontroller, the fastest of any digital ignitions. This means that the controller analyzes up to 15,000,000 critical instructions per second to produce the most accurate timing control and rev limits possible! There are two smooth rev limits, one for top end overrev protection and another for a launch rpm. For nitrous applications or for racers looking for a little more mph, there is a high speed retard circuit that is adjustable up to 9.9 . These features are adjustable with rotary dials plus there is a diagnostic LED. The Digital-7 Plus can be used on 4, 6 or 8-cylinder engines and should be used with an MSD HVC Coil



Programmable Digital-7:
The Programmable Digital-7 delivers incredible spark energy combined with a long list of advanced programming features. After working with professional racers and sanctioning bodies, this list of adjustments and settings has grown giving racers more control over their timing and rpm functions! It provides a separate timing curve for each gear. That means up to six curves can be selected through a run so you can add more or less timing to match the load and engine speed throughout a run. Other updated features include retard steps that can be ramped on and off, and a new Traction Control Detection (TCD) system. This TCD circuit monitors the magnetic pickup input and if it senses that the signal has been modified it will set a trouble code and flash indicating that traction control has been detected! MSD have been working with different race sanctions to help them with illegal traction control systems and the TCD circuit is the answer. To handle the additional computations, MSD upped the microprocessor performance to 40 MHz! This is the most powerful and quickest controller used in any digital ignition control so you can rest assured that every adjustment is accurate. The Ignition can be triggered with a points/ECU trigger, magnetic pickup or a non-magnetic pickup of 4, 6 or 8- cylinder engines. It is supplied with vibration mounts, PC harnesses, wiring and the Pro-Data+ software.



Programmable Digital-7 Plus:
If you re a consummate engine tuner and know how to take advantage of minute changes in timing during a quarter mile pass, then the Programmable Digital-7 Plus is the ignition for you!

All of the standard programmable features such as Individual Cylinder Management, Step Retards, Rev Limits, Shift Points and more are included in the Plus version but you also get more. Much, much more.

Absolute control over every aspect of your ignition timing including:
*Map a complete timing curve for every gear.
*Stage retards can be set to ramp the timing.
*Updated X-Y plots with interpolation for smooth changes.
*View all ignition events in a new Launch History window including the retard sum, manifold pressure, rpm, shift points and more.

The new ignition has a MAP sensor Weathertight connector that plugs into most GM style MAPsensors (not included). This information lets the ignition s microprocessor know the exact boost pressure. From there you can set up a curve down to 0.25pisa increments for every 0.1 through the MSD software on a PC or with the optional hand held monitor. All of the features racers have come to expect are still included in the Programmable Boost Ignition. This includes individual cylinder timing, stage retards, rpm limits, shiftpoints and more. The race proven output of the ignition is a stout 190 millijoules of spark energy with a primary voltage of 535 volts. Plenty of omph to light a fire in a cylinder with high boost pressures! For even quicker computations and management capabilities this ignition uses a 40Mhz RISC microprocessor � the most powerful of any digital ignition!

A MAP sensor is required for the boost circuit. You can find these sensors here.The Ignition is supplied with wiring harnesses, mounting hardware, an RS232 computer harness and the Pro-Data+ software on a floppy disk. (The Hand Held Monitor can also be used for programming.) It will accept trigger signals from a points/ECU output or a magnetic pickup.

Digital-7 Programmable w/TCD and Data Acquisition:

Serious racers crave data after a run and this new Programmable Ignition answers their call. We took the race-legal and integrated ignition data acquisition capabilities! After a pass, you can save and then review important information such as the engine's rate of acceleration, shift points, launch rpm, timing changes and much more. MSD 8 Plus;
The MSD 8-Plus Ignition produces the same extreme output of the original 8-Series, yet is now in a smaller housing with improved efficiency and internal components. One distinct change is now a built-in 2-Step Rev Control. Now you can switch between two rev limits without extra wiring or housings. For those that are looking for a dual fire MSD 8, the new 8-Plus is all you need. Our engineers were able to deliver an ignition that is capable of firing two coils at once for those extreme racers using dual plug race setups.
