Having the company’s grassroots in kart racing, Steve Tillet, the company’s founder, made the first prototype of the Tillet seats out of his need.
During the ’70s, with the introduction of stickier tires for karting, it is common for racers to have ribbed bruises due to slipping and sliding in their seats. By using fabric from a used motor vehicle and attaching it on the seat, they were able to eliminate the injuries.
This, in turn, allowed them to attack the corners more aggressively compared to their competitors. It was noticed by other racers as well. It eventually led to them ordering the same seats for their race cars.
